Triage
By Paul Rikala
They say that you can learn a lot about the life of a tree by examining the rings of its trunk.
The number and thickness of them will tell you how many years the tree has seen and how it fared in each, rainfall or draught -- but it's only when the tree's life is at its end that you can read the whole story. Otherwise, all you see is gnarly bark.
It's no different with people. Well, not the part about the rings, but the other parts. Only when a body is faced with their own mortality can they take proper stock of the life they have lived...
... and find purpose in all their accumulated years.
