LISTENING COMPREHENSION
Edited by Günther Friesinger
Everything around us produces, reflects or absorbs sounds. This backdrop
of sounds helps us navigate, it gives us signals and triggers immediate
reflexes. Sound and music has always been closely associated with
technology. Each and every instrument or tool, be it as simple as it may,
aids the production of sounds thereby also influencing the
characteristics of said sound. What significance does sound have in a
digital culture? How does technology influence the quality of sound?
Language is first and foremost acoustic information. Communication and the
organization of the same is strongly based on auditory elements. Not only
humans, but also animals use sounds to communicate among themselves. Sound
is propaganda. Telling stories. Sounds have an immense emotional
potential. Can memories be stored in sounds? Space and sound have always
been interlocked elements, but how does sound interface with virtual
spaces? How does sound permeate the digital? Is there an acoustic
signature of each and everything? Are there sounds if no one is listening?
Besides the pleasant characteristics of sound there is also the too-much,
too-loud and too-long. What are our mechanisms of protection against
unwelcome sounds? How does the human body react? What strategies exist
against acoustic pollution? Listening Comprehension broaches the subject
of listening and being heard. paraflows .6 invites you to listen, feel and
see.
