HET FUKKING LICHT – kutplaneet

(download, narrominded)

Yes, Het Fukking Licht means exactly what you might think of at first when reading it, but it is Dutch (or at least some sort of Dutch, if it is not really Dutch.) What a start for a review of improvised electro-acoustic noise! Het Fukking Licht enjoy to shroud themselves in enigma and mystery, as the duo not only keeps anonymous, but has also invented some rule to make their encounters more interesting and challenging. Most interestingly, they won’t tell each other what instruments they will bring along for their next live gig, but as both seem to be multi-instrumentalists you get to hear percussions, winds, loops, synthie and all kinds of mangled and warped stuff which is impossible to guess its origin. Some might be kitchen pots, for all I can hear. They also release their works in prime-numbers only, which will make an interesting challenge for the free download of “kutplaneet”.

“Kutplaneet” consists of three long pieces: “borstroffelfactor”, “stichting vikingbehoud” and “flutheelal” and I have a few ideas what those might mean, but let’s leave it at that. The duo dives slowly into their sounds, letting them evolve by their own means and flow, never coerce anything against its will. If the sounds stay in a pensive mood, almost ritualistically percussive with longwinded wails on top, then so be it. If they start to fill up with chaotic noise and uncontrollable thunder to a frenzied climax of feedback and noise, then so be it either. Life is too short to try to make things do what they don’t want instead of surfing the flow enjoying what becomes a success and leaving aside what asks to be left aside.

On here they stay mostly in a more contemplative mood. Sounds evolve with little sparks of feedback over a fundament of bass notes or bathed in a light of chiming ringing notes. Like Dirac or Perlonex the intricate ear and passion for minimalistic changes in sounds, mostly at the most microscopic level, is the basis of the fascination for this kind of music. With Het Fukking Licht a lot of things are going on at the same time, these are not mono-thematic drones, but excursions into complex arrangements of noises, sounds and harmonies. But next to the differentiation of the single ingredients, there is also always the transcending and sometimes (hopefully) mindblowing impact of the whole piece taken together. Without getting too deep into synergies and the facts of transcendental mathematics, there is reason enough to suggest that a big portion of the effect if electro-acoustic improvisation is made by the person listening But interestingly the recipient actually has no means of taking any decisions in the evolvement of the music, but has to take whatever comes for what it is. And then make it his own purely in a cognitive way. All of this may also explain why this kind of music is a fringe affair in so many ways, but mostly regarding the audience. But those few it is very rewarding.

PS: “kutplaneet” is not really download-only, but since the CD-version is limited to 29(!) pieces, which are probably long gone and sold out now, I found it more reasonable to point out the free download only.
