NONINE RECORDINGS

Some weeks ago two albums of artists I had never heard of landed in my box. I fell for them after first listen. They were "live long and prosper" by Slowcream and "rymdmyr" by Neaubau. Both were released on Nonine. Reason enough to contact Me Rabenstein, the main mind behind the label to get some more insights. The only thing we forgot was to ask where that name comes from...

Why did you start the label?

we did release two 12", "leupolz & raabenstein" and "bartholomäus & raabenstein" on pauls musique, germany, in the late nineties. 2001 nonine recordings was formed as sublabel of pauls to create a wider range for more experimental projects in the jazzy electronica field. soon after we decided to be autonomous and released several albums and 12" distributed worldwide by pp sales, hamburg, germany. with the breakdown of pp sales in 2004 nonine was not as bancrupt as many other young labels but went to sleep for a while, reflecting on new possibilities. in 2006 we discovered myspace as a brilliant tool to display musical ideas and to create an artistic and public network. 2008 we relaunched nonine recordings mainly as a netlabel with the big goal to create as much public interest to release physical again...

What is the purpose?

we work on a individual recognisable nonine sound.

albums are the second goal. listening to an artists world in its full creation is more than a faceless free downloaded and fast forgotten track of whomsoever.

When you say "individual recognisable nonine sound" - how would you describe that?

dark cinematic urban with different vibes, structures and moods

Where do you see the label in five years?

well, it takes two to tango. if we are good we'll be back with physical releases.

Is there a release you regret having done? Or one you regret not having done?

i have a big problem with finishing things, so i don't like each release (i had my fingers on) at least for one year, then they slowly come back... and each album or ep has one track where i think... could have been done different...

Please tell us something about yourself: what is your “musical” history?

good one. i could start with my father's mandolin worrying my early aural spheres. did some lousy performances as a singer in a punk band, worked with several musicians on the score of my early films, but thats not it... mainly, i did tons of mixtapes for my friends. in 1997 i met a fine and brillant allround musician who taught what to do here... the rest one can listen to on www.nonine.com.

You made films? What kind of films and why did you stop?

i did 16mm experimental short films and stopped it for i was to young directing a bunch of people (which has changed i hope)

Do you see analogies between making films and making albums?

yes and no. there are certain similarities in editing. a good movie sucks you in for its story, actors, dialogue and such. it has a beginning and an end in between you spread your content. albums that are of any interest for me do the same, they show a chain of pearls in the right order with ups and downs, start and finish... but you look at a movie as a whole, the audience doesn't do that with an album... but we do so anyway...

And about yourself: what is your dayjob? Your hobbies? Your dreams and visions?

my dayjob is graphic design and nonine recordings, hobbies... few time for that, dreams and visions..., to die working but laughing... i could say worldpeace but then the laugh is on me...

There is quite a large number of bigger and smaller labels operating in the field of electronic music with dub / ambient / drone / experimental tones and more and more are offering this kind of music for free on the internet. Two questions follow instantly: what makes noonine different (please say the quality!)? How do you select what to release on the label?

arrogance killed the cat, so i'd say nonine has character... and i don't choose, my stomach mainly decides what to be released on nonine

How do the changes in music production and listening (illegally sucking five thousand mp3s per month on your ipod has to have an effect on how you listen to them...) affect the label? Your own musical behaviour?

giving the people music for free downgrades the value, makes it a wanted but unfocused side effect. i think this all started with dj's mixing music to an endless monoblock. in clubs to find some fun, in shops to buy some shoes, everywhere's this sonic wiggeling carpet. people got used to this, it becomes an everydays manor, at home, on their ipod etc. the listener wishes to create his own atmosphere, whilst the content becomes exchangeable.

sometimes i do listen to netradio and this effect turns on very fast. if time be, i listen to my own record collection. i use mp3's mainly to exchange data in the net, the only cdr's here are promos and i do buy vinyl (if possible).

Where do the people that listen to the music you release come from? Are the from a single region or are they dispersed all over the world?

radiostations such as bogaloo radioshow (germany), fm4 (austria), basic soul radio (uk), sound of swoud (netherlands), art of beats (canada), and radiofrance (to name a few)...

on myspace, soundcloud, last.fm and our website...

Do you feel that nonine is a global label or do you feel it is strongly connected to Berlin?

nonine started as a berlin thing and is european now. nonine will be global (soon to be most hated word of the year) when we'll be producing albums with african, asian or south american musicians, mixing their origins with urban electronica...

Berlin has a very good image with young, creative people – where does that come from? What made you go to Berlin? Could Nonine have started any other place as well?

the creative berlin image always existed, it only changed it's ingredients each decade. politics in the sixties, music in the seventies... etc i came here by accident, wanted to study here for only one year and got stuck for whatever reason... nonine could have been started in every city.

creativity is a social phenomena depending on the people you meet, work with, love... good people are everywhere and i think it's even easier to meet with them in smaller towns.

Even though I am mainly interested in current music “from the fringe”, I also listen to a lot of rather regular rock and pop music from the Seventies and the Eighties. Do you have such a musical secret vice? Do you like rock music (in the Jack Black sense of the word...) or is it just electronica all day round?

Is singing / lyrics overrated?

no it helps delivering musical ideas, as frank zappa did... but he never liked singing

Do you get reactions from listeners? Or: what reaction from listeners would you like to get?

despite the regular myspace talktalk we receive a lot of radio dj feedback, reviews etc... you can find that on our nonine.com site beside the releases. an ideal reaction could be... how can we help you?

What are the plans for the near future?

doing (almost) everything to entertain your brain

Final question, how can we help you?

enjoy our melody
